I edited the template a bit, preliminary results are at Category:Blooded_Knife_Sources. Did you have something else in mind or does that work?

At first I was hesitant to use "smart" code in more places because it burnt me once (detecting empty categories that have article text on their page vs. categories that contain articles but no text is pretty difficult), but it should be very okay here as the same template code is used for Item itself and seems to work okay there now.
