Success

The view

The climb is slow. But the Serpent of the Dome accepts you. […] […] The sky […] is a sheet of glass; the Parabolan sun, […]

[…]

[…] near the base of the dome, a panther walking by, with […] your reflection.

[…] "I wouldn't worry about it," says the Serpent. "It Is Not."

Description summary:
The climb to the top of the Dome is disorienting. The Serpent of the Dome meets you at the top; it tells you about Parabola’s Sun. As you examine Parabola from the Dome, you see a reflection of yourself walking with a panther. The reflection disappears after you climb down from the Dome.

What the Serpent tells you in the third paragraph varies based on a choice in one ambition. The view described at the start of the fourth paragraph varies based on Ravages; see table below.

The Sun Cracked?Description
No"The sun was born," says the Serpent of the Dome. "With certain modifications. Those women augmented it in the shell." But it does not seem to hear if you ask more questions.
YesThe Serpent brings its head high enough that it can stare into your eyes. It has not forgotten how the sun was cracked. Its gaze makes your neck prickle.
RavagesDescription
0 - 3You can see closer things, too: the jungle canopy, the edges of your Base-Camp. Far off, the Smoking Shore.
4 - 7Parabola has not been too damaged recently: there are no armies moving on the horizon, no burnt swathes in the foliage. Your Base-Camp is safe, and not very distant.
8 - 11Here and there, the traces of battle are still visible – dead trees in the jungle, meadows that have ceased to bloom. At least your Base-Camp is safe.
12 - 19The terrain still shows the destruction of recent battles. Whole areas of the forest are laid low, and the hulks of siege-machines have been left to rot. Your Base-Camp bristles with guards.
20+Destruction from the recent war is visible everywhere. Smoke hangs in the air; ash blows across your cheek. Carrion birds circle over a field of the vanquished.

Failure

Far, but not far enough

You climb a few dozen feet above the floor of the jungle, fingers scrabbling at the rock. Sometimes shards of jade come away under your touch. Sometimes they simply aren't there. Put your foot on the wrong support, and you slide back to the ground.
