Getting started on wiki editing[edit]

Hey there! Always good to see a new face on here. Editing can be rather impenetrable with all the templates we use—my preferred method is to copy the complicated templates from other pages that do the same thing, then edit the fields. (This is easiest in the classic editor, which you can set as the default in your preferences.) Many of the templates also have documentation on their pages, such as Template:Action. That said, some templates are a little less clear in their usage, like {{Unlock}} being used for Unlocked with but not for Locked with. Eventually we'll have a proper guide to all of them but for now feel free to ask for clarification!

Thank you for your kind words. As I've also aked on rah7's page, how do I inbed links. I am currently editing the two different versions of enquire as to sourcing an egg and i want to add a link in the wiki note to link the pages that are replacing and being replaced(something like |Wiki Note= This option is replaced by(new version) after playing it once and |Wiki Note= This option replaces (old version) after that one is played once) How do I add a link in place of old and new version?

Edit; found the answer by looking trough the source of Factions(purely because thats the first page I clicked on) as you suggested and copying that
Asarta (talk) 18:34, May 11, 2020 (UTC)
You can link to pages on the wiki using square brackets. For example, Bring Up your Egg becomes Bring Up your Egg. You can also change the text the link displays as: Raise Eggs becomes Raise Eggs.

Be careful with the vertical pipe inside templates though. It's also the separator for template fields, so it can behave unexpectedly, especially in nested templates. I don't fully understand the order it's processed, but if the formatting looks wrong try using the vertical pipe template {{!}} instead and see if that solves the problem.

Thank you for your reply but I already managed to find it by digging through the source code of several pages as you suggested. Edit: Another question however, i have this(see your help in action) page. the problem I'm running into is that I can't seems to find out how to change the 1,2,3 in 1,2,3-4 etc how do I do that?
Asarta (talk) 18:52, May 11, 2020 (UTC)
Using # automatically generates a numbered list. I don't think there's any way to customize it though. The two options are either leaving the repeated level text as-is or manually making a list like so, with the beginning colon adding an indent:

:1. You've asked someone what is happening with Whitsun :2. You've collected several rumours about Whitsun :3-4. You've collected a number of rumours about Whitsun, often contradictory

1. You've asked someone what is happening with Whitsun

2. You've collected several rumours about Whitsun

3-4. You've collected a number of rumours about Whitsun, often contradictory

Here's a guide to the basic wiki formatting.

Paramount Presence guide[edit]

Just a heads-up that Failbetter have announced that the way to achieve PP will significantly change next week.
Rahv7 (talk) 14:17, May 28, 2020 (UTC)

I know, already added Wiki Notes to differentiate between old new versions. Will update the Guide as soon as we have more information

Quality categories on Guide pages[edit]

Hello,

I noticed  you've manually added quality categories (like London's Sinew etc) to the Paramount a Presence guide. Can I ask what your reasoning/objective is there?

in general we try not to add categories manually - most categories are added by the correct use of templates. There are corner cases of course (and that's why I am asking). In addition, the quality categories are really intended to be for the *in game* uses of that quality, so in general are not used on meta-information pages like guides. If your objective is to draw attention to the guide from these quality pages then we typically do it by an explicit link to the guide (e.g see Profession which points Professions (Guide)
Mikey thinkin (talk) 07:06, May 29, 2020 (UTC)

Oh, my intention was indeed to draw attention to it. I'll remove the Category's and add links to the Guide

Fixed it

PoSI guide vs PP guide - transclusions[edit]

Hello again :)

Thank you for the great work on the Paramount Presence guide. I noticed that, as acknowledged, PP guide has sections that duplicate PoSI guide. In general, when several pages use identical content we try to use transclusion. I.e. one page will contain the actual typed text while all the other pages with the same text simply "insert" it via some template magic. The advantage of that is that you only ever need to edit the original page and the content on all the other pages is updated automatically.

So I was going to propose we use transclusions for PP and PoSI too and wanted to check if my understanding is correct - the "Note on Old/New Paramount Presence" section is shared between the two guides, the "A Paramount Presence!" section is shared, the "London's Body" section is not shared as a whole but the individual tables within it are shared. Nothing else is shared. Is that correct?

If so and you are happy with my suggestions I'll look into doing that (though not till later).
Mikey thinkin (talk) 07:48, May 29, 2020 (UTC)

Please do! I know Rahv7 did something like this once (and made my head hurt) but I haven't got a clue how. The parts are indeed:

* Becoming A Paramount Presence (the old way)
* The table's of London's Blood et cetera but not the associated text about what is the easiest one
* Known to All
* A Paramount Presence
Asarta (talk) 08:24, May 29, 2020 (UTC)
Done! Let me know if anything is off

I transcluded *from* the PP guide *to* the PoSI guide. So when the information changes we need to update the PP guide (as far as the transcluded sections are concerned) and the PoSI guide will be updated automatically.

University Laboratory[edit]

Glad you're working on this guide; I know a lot of people will find it useful!

Saw this comment, and thought it might be a helpful bit of info for the guide: https://fallenlondon.fandom.com/wiki/Favours:_Society#comm-68704

Equipment Locks[edit]

Hi there, you've asked about adding equipment lock information to the {{[[Template:Places|Places]]}}-template. Since Failbetter have indicated that this feature will stay at least for a few select locations, I do now also think it would make sense to add this to the template.

Did you already get started on this? Otherwise I would look into it.

Cheers, rahv.

Edit: Please ignore, I've noticed there's already an outfit-tag implemented. :)
Rahv7 (talk) 20:31, August 2, 2020 (UTC)

Yes as you've already seen there is a lock already in place using |Outfit=yes/no. If you want to help could you please check any locations you have access to in Category:Outfit needs checking?

I've already done the main setting, Parabola and I'm currently busy doing the Zee and Overzee locations
Asarta (talk) 04:41, August 3, 2020 (UTC)
Oh also could you perhaps add Jericho Locks to the Endgame part of the dropdown menu
Asarta (talk) 09:40, August 3, 2020 (UTC)
Done!

Retiring festival pages[edit]

Hello there, I've noticed you marked a couple of Election-pages as retired.

If a storylet or card is expected to return next year, we don't do that. It gives the impression that the storylet/card will not appear again. So, for instance, it's okay to mark F.F. Gerbrandt's card, but it's not okay to retire "Learn more about the candidates".

If you have an overview which pages you marked, it would be nice if you could un-retire these again. Cheers!
Rahv7 (talk) 20:05, August 6, 2020 (UTC)

Oh yes my fault. Lucky enough I almost didn't retire any as I realized that some hadn't been retired and asked a question about this on Adnoam's wall. A quick look through my contributions seems to indicate I only did:

* The Tentacled Entrepreneur (Card)
* The Viscountess of the Viric Jungle
* The Viscountess of the Viric Jungle (Election Candidate)
* F.F. Gebrandt (Election Candidate)
* The Tentacled Entrepreneur (Election Candidate)

A quick question to you are the last three okay? Because they are Actions under Learn more about the Candidates but we can logically expect them not to reappear. The same thing also goes for storylets like The Mayoral Election 1898 which won't reappear again while most of the Actions described there will.
Asarta (talk) 04:51, August 7, 2020 (UTC)
Ah, excellent. The one's you've mentioned are okay to retire.

I'd just noticed "Learn more about the candidates" was retired, too (I removed that yesterday) and wanted to make sure I'm not overlooking anything. Thank you :)
Rahv7 (talk) 08:36, August 7, 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for all your work on the Wiki![edit]

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks when I saw that you are making the Attending a Party page into a table - which should be useful.

Cheers!
