Wiki tips[edit]

Hi!

A few tips when editing:

# I've seen you use the Broad difficulty calculator (which is great!), but for most difficulties you don't have to copy-paste the information by yourself. For your convenience the Action template can auto-fill the difficulty. Just write the base difficulty (the value at which your success chance is 60%) in the BroadDiff field and the attribute being checked within double square brackets in the BroadQuality field. (Note: The above doesn't work for Narrow difficulties or multiple difficulties.)
# Speaking of brackets... When we write gains or losses the name of the item or attribute or quality changed is linked and in bold. You can do this by writing them like so: Shadowy. Which gives you Shadowy.

For example see the difference between our two edits.

Thank you for the tips!

I'm still getting used to this Wiki... I am mainly working on another Wiki (a lot less alive one, but not dead just yet >:3) with its own rules, so I know how brackets and dashes affect text.

I will use the Broad difficulty calculator from now on and try to remember linking and "bolding" gains or losses when I add them.

By the way, may I ask your advice on a page I've created here? Category:Unraveling a Coded Message - I misspelled its title (it should be "Unravelling a Coded Message") and now I cannot change it... Plus I'm not sure if I created it right in the first place, as it won't appear when I try to add it as a category to other pages. Any help on the subject would be very appreciated..
HimeNikki (talk) 05:27, March 13, 2014 (UTC)
Apparently I can't rename a category, so I've deleted that one and created a new one here. Strangely some pages of this story seem to spell it with one 'l' and some with two. The Coded Message and But what is this? used to spell it with one 'l'. Could you send in a typo report to FBG (typos@failbettergames.com)?

Regarding categories: You can add them either in non-editing mode at the bottom of the page or in editing mode in the right side of the page. When you do an empty category that contains a link to that page would be automatically created. After that you can go to that category's page and edit it.

All categories appear as auto-complete text when you try to add a category, but new categories take time to register (a day or so for me) so they may appear as non-existent. But as long as you've added at least one page to that category, they do exist.

Also, when linking (like the unlock here) to a quality which is also a category it's useful to create a Redirect page.
Vae Victis (talk) 09:30, March 13, 2014 (UTC)
Unraveling vs. Unravelling - According to this dictionary entry, it actually can be spelled in both ways. It's different for British and American English. Stiil, I'll have to open up a new email account just to check that and make a screenshot.

Ok, thanks, now I understand.
HimeNikki (talk) 09:43, March 13, 2014 (UTC)
Hello again! How have you been? I would like to ask you a couple of questions, if you don't mind.

1. I'm not sure if anyone really cares, but in the category A Zailor in the making the word "making" should start with a capital letter. I can prove this with a screenshot if you want.

2. About the new Making Waves sidebar image. Has the image Wavessmall.png

Wavessmall.png

been permanently replaced with the image Sidebarmakingwavessmall.png in challenge rewards? If it is so,

Sidebarmakingwavessmall.png

may I replace the old image with the new one on the pages here that bear that image in the rewards section?

If I should not do that, I still want to become more helpful for this Wiki. Could you please give me a different assignment or task?
HimeNikki (talk) 15:20, April 16, 2014 (UTC)
There are some quite a few places where making waves haven't been updated yet. You can obviously update the image in reward sections, as long as it's not a different quality - feel free to do this for other qualities as well!

I've fixed A Zailor in the Making - there are still some pages that link to the redirect page, but that's not an issue unless there's a double redirect somewhere.

Otherwise, trimming pages is definitely still needed, so you can think about that while updating pages as well =)
Aximillio (talk) 19:15, April 17, 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for approving of this. Which qualities (except for Making Waves) had their images changed recently? EDIT: (That was a silly question, never mind it.) Will do!

That's great, thank you.

Ah, yes, the trimming. I might as well do some, but I'm not sure that I'll have the patience to do this to almost 3000 pages.
HimeNikki (talk) 05:34, April 18, 2014 (UTC)
It's a community effort. So don't worry and do what you can :)
Vae Victis (talk) 17:28, April 18, 2014 (UTC)
I understand. Thank you! :3
HimeNikki (talk) 17:32, April 18, 2014 (UTC)
Maybe my question "Which qualities (except for Making Waves) had their images changed recently?" wasn't so silly after all, as I've noticed only Making Waves and Influence. So can one of you tell me if that is all, or list the qualities I've missed?
HimeNikki (talk) 18:08, April 18, 2014 (UTC)
Prior to these we've also fixed all menace icons for instance, but just at the moment I think it's only those, however you never know which icons get changed...
Aximillio (talk) 21:28, April 18, 2014 (UTC)
Speaking of changes, it appears that the full stop at the end of the title of this card has been removed. I'm not sure about the other card (Nightmares > 6), but no. 1 definitely does not have it anymore.
HimeNikki (talk) 16:25, April 20, 2014 (UTC)
Fixed both.
Aximillio (talk) 19:59, April 20, 2014 (UTC)
The word "yours" in Inconvenienced by your Aunt now begins with a capital letter.
HimeNikki (talk) 08:15, April 30, 2014 (UTC)
Fixed

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback btw =D
Aximillio (talk) 18:26, May 1, 2014 (UTC)
Thanks.

No problem, my pleasure! ^-^
HimeNikki (talk) 00:49, May 2, 2014 (UTC)
A nocturnal visitor to the Palace Cellars is now written like that: A Nocturnal Visitor to the Palace Cellars.

And You know that old soldier. doesn't have the full stop at the end of its title.
HimeNikki (talk) 21:41, May 2, 2014 (UTC)
Edit: Done. Thank you!
Vae Victis (talk) 19:35, May 3, 2014 (UTC)
I haven't noticed any Fate-required storylets/Actions in Inconvenienced by Your Aunt, yet this action appears to be fate-locked here for some reason. I've seen it in the game and this action is not Fate-locked, unless the entire story of Inconvenienced by Your Aunt is fate-locked, which it apparently isn't.
HimeNikki (talk) 11:43, May 8, 2014 (UTC)
Everything after level 7 is fate-locked because you need to pay fate to advance the story after A letter from your aunt (by choosing the second option).
Vae Victis (talk) 17:32, May 8, 2014 (UTC)
So, the pages that are inaccessible without Aunt lvl 7 should be locked/deleted, am I right?

Also, the item Souls is referred to as "Soul", in singular, as of now.
HimeNikki (talk) 18:35, May 9, 2014 (UTC)
Hello? Is there anyone there?
HimeNikki (talk) 09:12, May 16, 2014 (UTC)
...only us, crickets :)

All the offending pages are now gone, but the Soul(s) thing will have to wait at least until tomorrow. Or next week. (Why yes, I'm very optimistic)
Vae Victis (talk) 23:56, May 17, 2014 (UTC)
Ok, thank you for doing that.
HimeNikki (talk) 07:37, May 18, 2014 (UTC)
Also, Making progress in the Labyrinth of Tigers  has now a capital P in the word "progress".
HimeNikki (talk) 07:44, May 18, 2014 (UTC)
Changed to Making Progress in the Labyrinth of Tigers. Souls delayed, as usual.
Vae Victis (talk) 22:26, May 25, 2014 (UTC)
Finally the souls have been dealt with.
Vae Victis (talk) 13:18, June 7, 2014 (UTC)
Awesome, thank you.
HimeNikki (talk) 16:24, June 7, 2014 (UTC)
Attending to the needs of a singular plant is now written like this: Attending to the Needs of a Singular Plant.
HimeNikki (talk) 20:58, June 15, 2014 (UTC)

Aximillio (talk) 21:55, June 15, 2014 (UTC)
Thanks.
HimeNikki (talk) 22:06, June 15, 2014 (UTC)
You don't happen to know the result of get rid of it 9?
Aximillio (talk) 22:11, June 15, 2014 (UTC)
No... Sorry.
HimeNikki (talk) 14:26, June 16, 2014 (UTC)
No worries.
Aximillio (talk) 14:53, June 16, 2014 (UTC)
Greetings, comrade! (Or should I say Captain)

Lately I have been renaming actions that cost a certain amount of fate by adding (<n> FATE) to their title. I did it because I saw a pattern of pages about actions that require Fate to be paid to advance the story. Was I following an incorrect pattern? Or should I do this to the remaining pages about actions that require a certain amount of Fate?
HimeNikki (talk) 16:36, August 10, 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't see why not. They'll still show up for searches for the articles, and the more info sent to the reader the better, usually. Especially if there are options with fate and without using the same names. A lesser need for disambig pages is always welcome.
Aximillio (talk) 19:36, August 10, 2014 (UTC)
I've messed something up while renaming a couple of pages andI created two pointless duplicates.

1. Seek the downfall of the Bazaar (5 FATE) is incorrect and has no reason to exist, whilst the correctly named Seek the downfall of the Bazaar (10 FATE) became a wrong redirect page.

2. I wanted to rename Seek knowledge to Seek knowledge (10 FATE), but as you can see, both of the pages still exist, because I accidentally created a duplicate. Maybe I should transform Seek knowledge into a disambiguation page. What do you think?

Please help me!
HimeNikki (talk) 06:55, August 19, 2014 (UTC)
1. Renamed the 5 fate page and deleted the redirect.

2. Removed "Seek knowledge" and kept the other one. No need for a redirect here.

3. All shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.
Vae Victis (talk) 09:23, August 19, 2014 (UTC)
1. Seduction: Honey-sipping heiress is now written like this: Seduction: Honey-Sipping Heiress

2. Seduction: Honey-sipping jewel-thief is now written like this: Seduction: Honey-Sipping Jewel-Thief

3. Commission: Write about prisoner's honey is now written like this: Commission: Write about Prisoner's Honey
HimeNikki (talk) 22:09, August 24, 2014 (UTC)
All done. Thanks again.
Vae Victis (talk) 22:31, August 26, 2014 (UTC)
Why does The Case of the Missing Heiress redirect to Blood from a stone instead of redirecting to Interrogate the manservant? The later was deleted, despite it appearing to be named "Interrogate the manservant" in the game? (Proof pic)

Also, Intrigue: The curate and his sister is now written like this: Intrigue: The Curate and His Sister.
HimeNikki (talk) 13:46, September 3, 2014 (UTC)
Fixed the Curate and His Sister thing.

I can't look up this storylet because I've finished it, but it probably has something to do with the annoying redirects that FL started using when the Clay Quarter appeared. There was a discussion on how to implement them here. In the retired "Interrogate the manservant", "Blood from a stone" was the only option.

I'm sorry, but you'll have to ask Indigofera and Aximillio about that.
Vae Victis (talk) 18:23, September 20, 2014 (UTC)
Hopefully it should be good now. And yeah, that's pretty likely the reason it got screwed somehow.
Aximillio (talk) 19:12, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

Thanks to this info I could fix the links in the Veilgarden section of Category:Location-specific cards in London. Thank you!
Reteq (talk) 22:41, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
Marvellous! It appears that all of the issues have been resolved. I'm so glad, thank you, guys!
