Starting a newspaper

Once you become A Person of Some Importance and reach Shadowy 110, you'll be able to begin your journey toward being An Editor of Newspapers by talking with the urchin on your roof or by drawing The Start of the Day's Business. Both starting points will allow you to travel to Doubt Street, albeit with a fee of 200 Silk Scrap for each visit until you finish staffing your newspaper.

Once you're in Doubt Street, you will need the following to arrange space to house your newspaper's working space:

• 1 x Favour in High Places
• 1 x Comprehensive Bribe
• 1 x Personal Recommendation

After reserving space, you will need to hire on various employees to write and edit articles. Hiring professionals will consume items, while friends will require you to have relationships with specific characters.

Finally, you must give your newspaper a name, and decide why you created it in the first place.

Once you have your own newspaper (i.e. An Editor of Newspapers - at least 10), you can work on publishing a new edition. Start the process by going to Doubt Street and Get those blasted things running, which will give you 12 x Hour before the Deadline (it costs 1 x Whirring Contraption, which can be obtained in Wilmot's End by searching for a Missing Woman). See below for various options you can try at different levels of this quality. Based on the options, you'll start collecting 3 types of Copy: Meritorious, Outlandish, and Salacious.

Once Hour before the Deadline reaches 1, it's time to Start the presses! and choose the type of edition you want to print. The edition types available to you will depend on how many of each type of Copy you've managed to collect.

Research on a Morbid Fad

With 60 Meritorious copy, one may instead make an edition on bones. This requires Research on a Morbid Fad.

For acquiring all possible research, you need:

• 150 Watchful
• University Laboratory
• Your own stall at the Bone Market
• Debonair Palaeontologist or Buccaneering Palaeontologist
• The opportunity card A Public Lecture (requires access to the bone market)

All options in total provide 6 research with a potential reward of 98 Survey of the Neath's Bones. In addition, you will earn 2 x Holy Relic of the Thigh of Saint Fiacre.

Each Research takes an extra action to acquire, right? So in total, you'd need however many actions you need to do a newspaper run [ranging from 18.5 to 14.5 actions depending on Whirring Contraption source], + 6 action to get all Research on a Morbid Fad, for 98 Surveys. Best case: 98/20.5 = 4.78 Surveys per Action Worst case: 98/24.5 = 4.00 Surveys per Action

Rewards

In addition to the below rewards, all of the editions requiring 60 or 104 of a specific type of Copy (except the Expose of Paleontology) will give 1 CP to Defender of Truth -, Prophet of the Gutter -, or Cardinal of Conspiracy -.

While reading the table below, please note:

• Some Newspaper editions require specific qualities or companions to maximise the payout. If that is the case, two reward values are listed in the last column:
  • The Min reward is the worst result you can achieve due to failed challenges.
  • The Mid reward is the best result you can achieve without any of the required qualities or companions.
  • The Max reward is the best result you can achieve if you unlocked all required qualities and companions.
• When calculating rewards that require Salacious Copy it is assumed that:
  • At 4 x Hour before the Deadline we always use A column revealing certain facts about an acquaintance (the option costs 2.5 to use, but adds 6 to reward). Make sure you have 5 x Scrap of Incendiary Gossip and an acquaintance or an alt to slight.
  • At 2 x Hour before the Deadline:
    • If we're making 104 x Salacious edition (The tawdry secrets of the famous laid bare!) we use Employ a little theatrical accountancy to get 500 x Piece of Rostygold.
    • Otherwise, we always use The interception of scandal which gives 2 x Sulky Bat.
• EPA is calculated counting only the actions spent on the newspaper instead, and subtracting the 6 sell value of the contraption required. Actively obtaining contraptions is typically less efficient and will therefore lower the overall EPA from what is listed. Some potential sources are listed below:
  • EPA is calculated by using Wilmot's End, where one cycle of 11 actions will earn you 2 x Whirring Contraption, increasing the total action cost of one newspaper to 18.5 actions (13 + 11 / 2).
  • EPA is calculated by obtaining 1 x Whirring Contraption from Hearts' Game via The assemblage of ticking brass, available to Tier 2 PoSIs. This increases the length to 19 actions, but awards an additional 1 x Brass Ring worth 12.5.
  • If you have the Shattered Mask from Evolution, you can gain 4 x Whirring Contraption by dreaming of Rosy Colours Leaping on the Wall at Zee. This takes just 8 actions, reducing the length of the newspaper carousel to 15 actions. However, each dream cycle requires drawing 8 Infrequent cards at Zee and gives +21 CP Nightmares.
  • Since the Hell is Missing summer 2025 event, owners of a Hellish Hymn can obtain up to 10 x Whirring Contraption in a single run of the Law-Furnace carousel by cashing out using the Take payment in spare parts option with between 6000 and 6249 Actus Reus. With maxed stats, this can be achieved with as low as 15 actions (including starting and cashing out), or 1.5 actions per Whirring Contraption, for a total action cost of 14.5 actions per newspaper.
• If you can reliably be pursued by an assassin, with a trusted acquaintance or an alt, this adds 1 action worth 12.5 to each cycle. Do keep in mind that this additional value comes from a card in the London opportunity deck.
